Christian Atsu’s body returned home

The body of Christian Atsu, was returned to Accra, Ghana on Sunday, February 19, 2023.

The Turkish airline flight landed in Accra on Sunday, and the Ghana Armed Forces carried away his coffin.

The Coffin was met on arrival by Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, staff of the Presidency, Prosper Harrison Addo -General Secretary of the GFA, his family and other well wishers.

Christian Atsu was found dead on Saturday under the rubble in his home in southern Turkey following the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, 2023.

Atsu played 65 times for Ghana and helped the Black Stars reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final in Equatorial Guinea.

The 31-year-old also played for Premier League sides Everton, AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Speaking at Kotoka airport, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia said: “We hoped against hope, every day that passed, we prayed and prayed. But alas, when he was found, he was no more.”

Dr. Bawumia added the late Atsu was much loved and would be sorely missed. “It is a painful loss, a very painful one.”

”Atsu would be given a “befitting” burial”. Dr. Bawumia added.

The remains were accompanied from Turkey by his family and Ghana’s Ambassador to Turkey, Francisca Ashietey-Odunton.
