Chris Hughton hails performance of home-based players in Black Stars victory against Liberia
Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has hailed the performance of the two home-based players who featured in Ghana’s convincing win Liberia in the international friendly.
Chris Hughton’s side ease past the Liberians 3-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium, a preparatory match preparations for their upcoming competitive fixtures in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Medeama SC defender Fatawu Hamidu was given a starting position in the absence of Abdul Baba Rahman and Gideon Mensah who are both injured.
His teammate, Jonathan Sowah, who had an outstanding season after scoring 12 goals in 18 matches, proved his worth with a pass that resulted in Ghana’s third goal scored by Jordan Ayew.
“Sometimes injuries can give us an opportunity go invite local players,’ Hughton told the press.
“So l think with Fataw and Jonathan coming in the last minute has giving the team good lift. And this opportunity has given them a great encouragement for more of our local players to exploit.”
Ghana will engage in two friendlies in October against Mexico and the USA.
