Chris Hughton expects ‘vocal’ Baba Yara atmosphere against Angola

Ghana coach Chris Hughton expects fans in Kumasi to play a key role during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola.

The Black Stars are returning to the hallowed Baba Yara Sports stadium for the first leg of the doubleheader on Thursday, March 23, 2023.

The 40,000 capacity edifice is expected to be chock-full for the crucial encounter which kicks off at 16H00.

“It’s a very passionate support, it’s a very vocal support, and any team that wants to do well wants a big crowd behind them. This I’m quite sure will happen. Whatever the numbers are I know they are very vocal crowd,” the Black Stars head coach said.

Coach Chris Hughton added, “We know as a team, and as the players, we have the responsibility to return this and the supporters must enjoy what they see. I can never guarantee the results but mostly they will see a team that is giving everything to get the result.”

The stadium has historically been a happy hunting ground for the Black Stars. Ghana are undefeated at the Baba Yara in 23 years.

Their last defeat at the fortress came against South Africa in the quarter-final stages of the 2000 AFCON.

Ghana are now in search of a ticket to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations slated for Cote D’Ivoire in January next year.
