Chris Hughton acknowledges Ghana’s goal-scoring woes, vows to pick right squad for 2023 AFCON

After Ghana’s recent 4-0 defeat to the United States of America, head coach Chris Hughton addressed the team’s challenges, particularly in scoring goals to secure victories.

He emphasized the difficulties the team has faced in this aspect of their performance.

Hughton also pointed out that there have been some positive aspects in the team’s journey, including their qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, the coach recognized the need for further development, especially with a tough AFCON tournament looming in January.

The West African powerhouse were drawn in Group B against record AFCON holders, Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique during the draw last week.

He expressed his commitment to working hard to select the right squad and tactics that will help the team secure the necessary wins for a successful AFCON campaign.

“We are all going through a difficult period with regards to the performances that can see us scoring goals to win games, that has been difficult”

“There are some aspects of the game that has been okay. We have qualified for AFCON and we did enough to win the group not just to qualify and that’s the balance”

“The balances are from there, we need to develop more because we are going to a tough AFCON tournament in January and we need to develop. I will continue to work hard as I can to pick the right squad, pick the right tactics to win the games we need to win to do well” he said.

The 34th edition of AFCON is expected to take place from January 13 until February 11, 2024.
