Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker agreeing a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Neither club has disclosed the transfer fee for the 35-year-old, who scored a career-best 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season. Only three English players scored more in the division during that campaign.
Welbeck becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride,” said Welbeck.
“I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.
“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
The move represents a departure from the transfer policy followed by Chelsea’s owners since their takeover in 2022. The club have largely focused on recruiting younger players, making Welbeck’s arrival a notable change in approach.
His signing also adds to the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s other centre-forward options. Joao Pedro is considered the club’s first-choice striker, while Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson are also on the books.
Welbeck began his senior career at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in a £16m transfer in 2014. He spent five years in north London, then moved to Watford, where he stayed for one season before joining Brighton in 2020.
He has won 42 caps for England and scored 16 international goals. His most recent appearance for the national team came in 2018, and he was not selected by Thomas Tuchel for England’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Despite his age placing him outside the profile of the young squad Chelsea have assembled over the past three years, Welbeck offers qualities that the club’s current forwards do not always provide. The move has also been linked to the interest of Xabi Alonso, with the striker viewed as a potential fit for the team’s tactical demands.
Welbeck’s 13 league goals for Brighton came from 12.5 expected goals, indicating a consistent return from the chances he received. His big-chance conversion rate of 47.6% was slightly below Joao Pedro’s 53.9% but above Nicolas Jackson’s 41.2%. Jackson spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich.
The former England forward also remains effective in stretching opposition defences. He made 132 runs in behind last season, while creating 20 open-play chances for Brighton. He hit the target with almost half of his attempts, underlining his efficiency in front of goal.
Welbeck’s contribution without the ball is another part of his appeal. He averaged 32 pressures per 90 minutes in the final third, a figure comparable with Pedro’s and higher than Jackson’s. That suggests he can operate within Alonso’s pressing structure without requiring a major adjustment.
His fitness record also remains a strength. Welbeck played in 37 league matches for Brighton last season, starting 26 of them.
The signing is unlikely to transform Chelsea’s attack on its own, but Welbeck gives the club an experienced and tactically disciplined option. His movement, ability to connect play and willingness to press could provide another dimension to the team’s forward line.
