Chelsea dealt blow as transfer target nearing new contract

Chelsea are set to be dealt a blow amid reports that transfer target Serge Gnabry is nearing an agreement for a new contract at German giants Bayern Munich this summer despite interest from the Blues.

Following Raphinha’s decision to opt for Barcelona over a move to Stamford Bridge, it was reported that Thomas Tuchel’s side had turned their attention to Gnabry as a potential alternative to bolster their frontline, with Raheem Sterling have already joined the club.

Out of contract in 2023, clubs could well be sensing an opportunity to pounce and land the 26 year old on the cheap this summer.

There was a suggestion that Gnabry’s previous links to Arsenal might jeopardise any potential move to west London this summer, but now it appears that there could be an altogether different issue.

Gnabry in talks to extend contract

As per German outlet Kicker, the Bayern Munich star is in talks to renew his contract in Bavaria, and there is mutual confidence that a deal could be struck this summer.

‘Both parties, players and club, are currently confident of agreeing on a contract extension beyond 2023 in the foreseeable future. Four or five more years’, they report.

Touching on the interest from Chelsea, “Gnabry prefers – as of now – a long-term future at Bayern”, they add.

Should the news prove correct, it would mean another dead end for Chelsea, and force Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel to consider other options.
