England midfielder Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a two-year contract after his Brentford deal was mutually terminated.
The 36-year-old becomes the 10th player to arrive at Chelsea this summer as new manager Xabi Alonso continues to reshape the squad. Henderson made 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford during the 2025-26 season, having returned to England last summer.
“Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” said Henderson.
“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Henderson began his professional career at Sunderland and made his Premier League debut for the club as a substitute during a 5-0 defeat by Chelsea on 1 November 2008.
He moved to Liverpool, where he captained the club to the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season. During his time at Anfield, Henderson also won the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup twice, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
The midfielder left Liverpool for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in 2023 before joining Ajax in January 2024. His spell in the Netherlands lasted until he returned to the Premier League with Brentford last summer.
Henderson has won 91 England caps since making his international debut in 2010. He has represented the Three Lions at seven major international tournaments, including the 2021 European Championship final, when England lost to Italy on penalties.
This summer, Henderson became the first Englishman to play at four different World Cups when he came on as a late substitute in England’s 2-0 victory over Panama.
That was his only appearance of the tournament, however, after he suffered a broken arm in unusual circumstances. Henderson fell awkwardly while attempting to jump over advertising hoardings beside the pitch after England’s 3-2 last-16 win over Mexico, a match in which he did not play.
He had earlier been booked during that game for criticising an officials’ decision while warming up.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, one point and one place below Brentford, and will not play European football this campaign.
Alonso has already overseen a busy period of recruitment. Chelsea agreed a club-record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers, 23, from Aston Villa, while 35-year-old England striker Danny Welbeck joined from Brighton in a reported £5m move on Saturday.
Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco arrived on Sunday, while defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, joined from Crystal Palace for £52m.
Chelsea have also signed 21-year-old right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £42m and 21-year-old right-winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £40m.
The club’s other summer additions are 23-year-old striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, 18-year-old left-back Denner from Corinthians and 17-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.
