Tenerife and Girona will meet in the Segunda promotion playoff final second leg on Sunday with a place in La Liga up for grabs.

The first leg between these rivals finished nil-nil with neither side able to get the upper hand.

Now, a winner will be declared as one of these teams will gain promotion to the top flight of Spanish football. Girona will visit Tenerife at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López. Playing at home could give the Islands the edge they need to win the final.

Tenerife won’t go easily, however. The Islanders finished fifth in the Segunda during the regular season, one point ahead of Girona. However, Tenerife’s form at the end of the campaign was abysmal.

The Islanders had to hold onto a playoff place by their fingernails. Tenerife lost their final three Segunda games on the trot. They recovered in the Segunda playoffs against Las Palmas, winning both legs of their tie and claiming a 3-1 aggregate win.

Girona went unbeaten in their final two games of the Segunda season. Los Rojiblancos lost the first leg of their playoff semifinal against Eibar 1-0, but won the second leg 1-0. The two-legged series went to extra-time where Girona claimed a dramatic win to reach the final.

Los Rojiblancos have far more momentum going into the final than Tenerife do ahead of Sunday’s game. However, momentum may not play a role in the final.

Since 2008, Girona and Tenerife have met a total of 20 times in all competitions. Girona have a record of 7W-7D-6L versus Tenerife in those 20 matches.

During the Segunda’s regular season, Tenerife did the double over Girona with back-to-back wins. Tenerife won at home 2-1 and away 1-0.

Girona were up and down on the road all season. They posted an away record of 7W-5D-9L. They were -5 in goal difference on the road.

Tenerife struggled at home this season posting a record of 9W-5D-7L. They failed to win five of their last six games at home in 2021-22.

The first leg of the final may have finished nil-nil, but Girona were on top for much of the game. Los Rojiblancos outshot Tenerife 16-3 with three shots to one hitting the target.

Girona posted 70% possession and completed 605 passes. Tenerife completed just 268 passes. Girona should edge Tenerife at the end of full-time in the second leg of the promotion final.

Forebet predicts a new draw here with under 2.5 goals scored.
