Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s move for Ronald Araujo offers a solution to an urgent defensive problem but also carries significant sporting risks.
The Liverpool legend described the proposed arrival of the Uruguay international as “a mixture of the best and the worst”, acknowledging that the deal makes sense financially while questioning whether Araujo can deliver the consistency and discipline required in the Premier League.
Liverpool’s defensive situation has made reinforcement a priority. Ibrahima Konate’s departure and fitness problems in the back line have left Virgil van Dijk as the only fully available experienced defender, creating a clear need for another player in the position.
Araujo would provide versatility as well as physical strength. The Uruguay defender can operate at centre-back or right-back, has played at the highest level and previously captained Barcelona. Carragher stressed that he had no doubts about the player’s physical qualities.
“Araujo is a physical beast, aggressive, and he can play at centre-back or right-back. He also has experience at the highest level. He has captained Barcelona and played in big matches,” said the former England defender.
Carragher also believes the structure of the agreement limits Liverpool’s exposure. A loan would allow the club to assess how Araujo handles the pace of English football and the demands of working under Iraola over the course of a full season before deciding whether to make the move permanent.
“The loan is low risk. You test him for a year, see whether he adapts to Iraola, and if he succeeds, you buy him. That part makes sense. He fills a gap without blowing up the budget,” Carragher said.
However, the former Liverpool defender’s approval ends there. His main reservations concern Araujo’s tactical judgement and concentration rather than his athletic ability.
“Enthusiasm is great, and he throws himself into challenges, but defending at this level is about decision-making, concentration and reading the game,” Carragher said.
He believes Araujo has repeatedly shown weaknesses in those areas during his most recent seasons with Barcelona. According to Carragher, the defender has struggled particularly when facing elite opposition, with lapses in focus leading to avoidable penalties and red cards.
“Often against the top teams he loses concentration, gives away silly penalties or gets sent off. The Premier League is unforgiving; one lapse and you will be punished,” he warned.
Carragher added that Araujo’s reliability and discipline had become concerns, while his performances had also declined.
“Araujo has suffered from issues with consistency and discipline, and his level has dropped,” he said.
The Liverpool great also questioned whether the club should have pursued a more established alternative, rather than a player who had regularly found himself behind 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi in Barcelona’s defensive hierarchy.
“They should have signed a more experienced defender instead of choosing a player who was always a substitute for the 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi,” Carragher said.
He returned to that criticism when assessing the circumstances behind the loan move, arguing that Araujo’s arrival could be viewed as a reaction to his reduced status at Barcelona rather than the recruitment of a proven leading player.
“Arriving here on loan after being told he is not a regular starter at Barcelona… it feels more like a reaction than a signing for a big star,” he said.
Carragher would have preferred Liverpool to commit to a more stable long-term option who fitted the club’s system, although he accepted that Araujo must first be given the opportunity to play before a final judgement can be made.
“I would have preferred a permanent solution that fits the system in the long term, but let’s see him play first. I’m just not excited yet,” he added.
