Arsenal needed only 23 seconds to break through Manchester City’s defence in Sunday’s Community Shield meeting, scoring the opening goal of the new English season.

For Arsenal, Calafiori’s early contribution provided a swift reward for their positive start. The goal also ensured the Community Shield began with a notable statistical landmark, ending a wait of more than five decades for another goal inside the first minute of the fixture.
Manchester City, meanwhile, are playing their first competitive match under new manager Enzo Maresca. His tenure therefore began with his side conceding almost immediately, as Arsenal moved in front before the opening minute had elapsed.
The goal came from a combination of Lewis-Skelly’s delivery and Calafiori’s finish, with the Italian taking advantage of Arsenal’s quick start. It was a decisive opening moment in a match that traditionally marks the beginning of the new English football season.
Opta’s record places the strike in the history of the Community Shield alongside Bobby Owen’s effort for Manchester City against West Bromwich Albion in 1968. Calafiori’s goal is the first recorded in the opening minute of the competition since that match.
