In a landmark move to advance women’s football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted each of the 12 qualified teams for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) a support fee of $120,000.
The total investment of $1.44 million is aimed at easing the financial pressures ahead of the tournament, which kicks off in Morocco from July 5–26, 2025.
This marks the first time CAF has offered direct financial support to all participating WAFCON teams, helping to cover logistics, travel, training, and player welfare.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe described the initiative as a bold step forward: “This support fee is a testament to our commitment to growing women’s football.
By easing financial pressures, we ensure teams can compete at their best and inspire the next generation.”
The funding has been welcomed by coaches and players alike, many calling it a “game-changer” that will improve preparation and performance.
This move is part of CAF’s broader 2021–2025 action plan for women’s football, which also includes grassroots development and increased prize money.
The winner’s prize for WAFCON 2025 has been doubled to $1 million, with total prize money raised by 45% to $3.475 million.
