The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the Champions League and Confederation Cup winners.

The CAF Champions League winner will now receive $6 million, a 50% increase from the previous $4 million, while the Confederation Cup winner will take home $4 million, doubling the previous prize of $2 million.

This increase is part of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s efforts to strengthen African club football and make it more competitive globally.

Since Motsepe took office in 2021, the prize money for the CAF Champions League has increased by 140%, from $2.5 million to $6 million, while the Confederation Cup prize has grown by 220%, from $1.25 million to $4 million.

The increased prize money is expected to boost the financial incentives for participating clubs, enabling them to invest in better infrastructure, player development, and coaching.

This move is likely to enhance the overall quality of African club football, making it more attractive to fans and sponsors.

CAF has also increased solidarity payments to clubs eliminated in preliminary rounds, from $50,000 to $100,000.

The total prize money for African club competitions now exceeds $42 million per season, a 114% increase since 2021.

The finals of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup are scheduled to take place in May 2026.

The increased prize money has generated excitement among African football fans, with several top clubs vying for the top honors.

Dr. Motsepe’s vision is to make African club football a global powerhouse, and this increase in prize money is a step towards achieving that goal.

With more resources available, clubs can now invest in better facilities, attract top talent, and compete with the best teams in the world.
