Bristol City trigger Antoine Semenyo extension

English Championship side Bristol City have activated their one-year option to extend the contract of Ghana international Antoine Semenyo until summer 2024.

This was confirmed by manager Nigel Pearson while speaking to Bristol Live.

Semenyo’s original contract signed in 2019 with an option was due to expire next summer – June 2023.

Taking up the extra year-long option in that agreement means the 22-year-old is to remain at Ashton Gate for the next 18 months.

Bristol could generate a decent amount of money should they opt to cash in on Semenyo in the upcoming January transfer window.

“Antoine, we’ve activated his extension. We have to protect our interests,” Pearson stated.

“Yes, they can. But then you’ve got to remember we will still have to meet financial fair play regulations and so obviously a sale would make that situation a lot easier to deal with, but the reality is that we would prefer to keep our best players.

“Our fanbase doesn’t want to know that we’re just looking to cash in on our best players because why would they then look forward with any optimism? So, what we have to do is try and get the balance right.”

He remains a subject of interest to clubs like AFC Bournemouth, Fenerbahce and Scottish Premiership duo Celtic and Rangers.

Semenyo – who featured at the 2022 Fifa World Cup with Ghana – has only scored three times in 18 league appearances in the 2022/23 season. He netted eight goals and provided 12 assists in 31 Championship games last term.
