Hearts of Oak and Kotoko are to blamed for their failures on the continent, according to Fred Pappoe, a former vice president of the Ghana Football Association.
Kotoko was eliminated in the first round of the Premier League Champions League after losing on penalties to RC Kadiogo.
Hearts of Oak are also on the verge of being eliminated after a 3-0 loss to Real Bamako in Mali.
Coincidentally, both clubs have parted ways with their head coaches ahead of the competition. Pappoe insists that the move is the root of their problems in Africa.
“The most prominent reasons why our clubs especially Kotoko and Hearts fail in the Africa club competitions is that the team that qualifies them for Africa mostly dismantled by the clubs themselves before the start of the competition,” Fred Pappoe told Kumasi based Akoma FM.
“Typical example is what Hearts did. You can’t sack Samuel Boadu with a week to Africa without appointing a new head coach, who does that? Kotoko also sold most of their players and when you do that, definitely you will be kicked out,” He said
Hearts of Oak play Real Bamako in the second leg on Sunday at 15:00 GMT, with David Ocloo as the team’s assistant coach while Kotoko, coached by Seydou Zerbo of Burkina Faso, will look to get rolling as soon as the Ghana Premier League’s injunction is lifted.
