Black Stars management committee chairman, Dr. Randy Abbey, has announced that preparations for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament will commence on Sunday, May 25.
Ghana will face rivals Nigeria on May 28 in the four-nation tournament, which also features Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
The team’s participation is part of a broader plan to prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September and October.
According to Dr. Abbey, the team will assemble in London on May 25 and have three training sessions before the first game against Nigeria on May 28.
“We had a meeting with the management committee, and the team will assemble in London on the 25th,” he said to 3Sports.
“They would have three training sessions before the first game on the 28th against Nigeria.”
Dr. Abbey also highlighted challenges in team selection, citing injuries and players engaged in European qualifying games.
“There are quite a number of players who are injured. There are a few players who are also engaged in qualifying games for Europe and so their clubs won’t release them,” he explained.
“Mind you, this period is outside the FIFA free period. And so, for those whose leagues will still be in session, and they are still in contention, they might not be available plus the injured players.”
The match against Nigeria is a rematch of their March 2024 encounter, which Nigeria won 2-1.
Ghana will aim to avenge that defeat and make a strong impression in the Unity Cup tournament.
