Black Stars Line Up Austria Friendly as World Cup Preparations Intensify

The Ghana Football Association is in talks with Austria over a possible international friendly as part of the Black Stars’ build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana are preparing for their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the technical team is keen to expose the squad to top-level opposition ahead of the tournament.

As already confirmed, Otto Addo’s side will face Germany in a high-profile friendly on March 30 in Stuttgart. Beyond that fixture, the GFA is exploring additional matches to sharpen the team before the World Cup kicks off.

GFA Director of Communications, Henry Asante Twum, has revealed that Austria is one of the countries currently in discussions with the Football Association.

“Austria is one of the teams we are talking to play after the Germany friendly game, and hopefully, when the contract is signed, we will make it official to the public,” Asante Twum told Sporty FM.

Ghana have been drawn into Group L for the 2026 World Cup and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto. The Black Stars will then face England in Boston before concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.

After disappointing early exits at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar, the Black Stars are determined to make a stronger impression at the expanded 48-team tournament. Securing competitive friendly matches against European opposition is seen as a key part of that preparation strategy.
