Black Stars Eye Quarter-Final Repeat at 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association has set an ambitious but measured target for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to at least replicate the country’s historic quarter-final run while remaining competitive throughout the tournament.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the immediate objective is to progress from the group stage, stressing that the technical team believes the squad has the quality and fighting spirit to compete with the world’s best.

“Our target for the World Cup is to qualify from the group stage and be competitive,” Asante Twum said on Akoma 87.9 FM. “We want to fight, we have the quality, and we believe we can match our quarter-final appearance and possibly go even further.”

Ghana famously reached the last eight at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a benchmark that continues to shape expectations around the senior national team. After disappointing early exits at Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022, the FA has intensified efforts to strengthen preparations for the expanded 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Asante Twum confirmed that head coach Otto Addo has requested further reinforcements to the technical team following additions made after Qatar 2022. However, he explained that negotiations are ongoing and details cannot yet be made public.

“Following the Qatar World Cup, we strengthened the technical team. The coach has requested some new additions, and the FA is currently working on them,” he noted. “But the individuals involved are under contract with their respective employers, so it is difficult to disclose names at this time.”

Preparations are expected to take clearer shape in the coming weeks. According to Asante Twum, key logistical decisions—including the team’s camping base will be announced in the first week of February.

The squad selection process will also follow a structured timeline, with a provisional squad expected in April before the final list is unveiled on June 1.

With long-term planning underway and confidence growing within the camp, the Black Stars are positioning themselves not just to participate at the 2026 World Cup, but to make a meaningful impact on the global stage once again.
