Black Stars coach for the third time: Kwasi Appiah officially throws his hat in the ring

Former Ghana coach James Kwasi Appiah has confirmed that he has officially put his hat in the ring to lead the senior national team once more.

Since Otto Addo left the Black Stars job after the 2022 Fifa World Cup last month, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to publicly define its approach to the recruitment of a new head coach but has already received over 60 applications from foreigners, Communications Director Henry Asante revealed last week.

The GFA spox also said that none of the interests received had a local name.

And Appiah – who has been unattached since his contract was not renewed by the current administration in 2020 – says he wants a third bite at the job.

“It is true [that I have applied for the job],” he told Kumasi-based Sompa FM.

“When I heard that the FA had come out to reveal that no Ghanaian was among the numerous applicants, I felt that being a Ghanaian, I had to prove that I could do something so it compelled me to add my application to that of the foreigners.”

This is the first time Kwasi Appiah is applying for the Black Stars job despite enjoying two stints. He was promoted from being an assistant when he first led the team from 2012 to 2014. The Fifa/Caf License A certificate holder was headhunted alongside current South Africa coach Hugo Broos when he returned for a second stint in April 2017.

Ghana is expected to recruit a new coach in time for the resumption of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in March.
