Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, were met with a rousing reception at the Kotoka International Airport on Monday, July 28, following their impressive third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Queens secured bronze after a tense 4-3 penalty shootout victory over defending champions South Africa, having drawn 1-1 in regulation time.
It marks Ghana’s first podium finish at WAFCON since 2016 and ends an eight-year medal drought on the continental stage.
Supporters, draped in Ghanaian colours, thronged the airport from as early as 4:00 am, singing and dancing in celebration of the team’s achievement.
Flags waved and chants echoed through the arrival hall as players and technical staff made their way out to the cheering crowd.
This milestone is seen as a major step in the Black Queens’ rebuilding journey under head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, who has guided the team to their strongest tournament performance in nearly a decade.
Officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and former national team players were present to welcome the team home and commend their efforts.
The Queens’ return to form has sparked fresh optimism about the future of women’s football in Ghana.
