Ghana’s Minority Caucus in Parliament has gifted the Black Queens a cash reward of GHS100,000 following their bronze-medal finish at the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin made the announcement on Tuesday, July 29, during the team’s visit to Parliament, commending the Queens for their resilience and impressive tournament run.
He presented the envelope containing the reward to the House as a symbolic gesture of appreciation.
The Queens, who returned to Accra on Monday, defied the odds in Morocco after a rocky start ; losing 2-0 to South Africa in their opener. But they bounced back to eventually beat Banyana Banyana in the third-place playoff via penalties, securing Ghana’s first WAFCON medal since 2016.
Calls are now growing for the state and corporate bodies to match this gesture with further support for the women’s game.
