Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has described Ghana’s performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as “heroic,” while calling for continued investment and scouting to build on their success.
Speaking at Kotoka International Airport following the team’s return from Morocco, Björkegren praised the squad’s resilience after securing third place ; Ghana’s best WAFCON finish since 2006.
“Step by step, we saw that we have the potential to beat almost all the teams in this tournament. The girls did the biggest job,” he said.
The Swedish coach highlighted the importance of the team’s pre-tournament camp and daily video analysis sessions, which he believes helped solidify tactical structure and confidence.
Looking ahead, Björkegren pledged to ramp up talent scouting both locally and abroad: “The future is bright in Ghana… we will keep spending time identifying more talent.”
He also commented on Ghana’s World Cup prospects:
“We know that we can win it, but we must continue to respect our opponents and keep improving.”
Ghana returned to WAFCON after missing the 2022 edition and capped a remarkable run with a 4–3 penalty shootout win over South Africa in the third-place playoff.
