Bechem United assistant coach Seth Osei has criticized the Black Stars’ selection policy, claiming goalkeepers from smaller clubs are consistently overlooked in favor of those from top-tier teams or abroad.
“Keepers who don’t play for the top teams are usually overlooked, but that’s not right,” Osei said. “Talent should come first, not which club you play for. Even a second-division player should be called if he’s good enough.”
Since 2017, very few goalkeepers from non-elite Ghana Premier League teams have been selected for the national team.
Osei’s frustrations echo the sentiments of many fans and analysts, who argue that the current system sidelines equally talented players simply because they lack the visibility or prestige of a top club.
As Ghana seeks to rebuild its footballing identity after a poor showing at AFCON 2024, the inclusion of overlooked but deserving players could be key to a stronger and more united Black Stars.
