Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has expressed his delight after guiding his side to a convincing 3-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars in the Ghana Premier League on Friday.
Speaking after the game, the veteran tactician revealed that his team’s motivation stemmed from their previous encounter with Holy Stars, which ended in disappointment.
“This is exactly what we wanted. We know how we suffered in their hands when we went there the last time,” Hayford said.
“We were determined that when they come here, we have to pay them back. We wanted to prove to them that we are the better side, and that is exactly what we did.”
Lions started strongly and took charge of the contest early on. Their persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Kwadwo Obeng Junior pounced on a rebound to open the scoring after Michael Ephson’s strike hit the post.
Ephson, who was instrumental throughout the first half, doubled the lead before the break with a composed finish, putting the hosts firmly in control.
Basake Holy Stars offered little threat in the second half, and substitute Anthony Owusu added a touch of brilliance with a stunning long-range effort to seal the emphatic 3-0 victory.
The win, which comes after their first defeat of the season to Bibiani GoldStars, sees Heart of Lions temporarily move top of the Ghana Premier League table, maintaining their perfect home record this campaign.
