Barcelona reopen long-standing interest in Azzedine Ounahi as midfield search begins

Barcelona are considering a move for Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi during the current summer transfer window, with the club looking for a replacement option after Frenkie de Jong’s injury.

The Moroccan has returned to Barcelona’s list of potential targets as the Catalan club assess how to strengthen their midfield. Spanish television programme El Chiringuito reported that Ounahi is being examined as one possible solution to the squad’s need for a new midfielder.

Ounahi’s performances have attracted attention from several clubs this summer, although the 24-year-old has yet to decide where he wants to continue his career. His future therefore remains unresolved despite the growing interest surrounding him.

The Girona player enhanced his reputation with Morocco at the 2026 World Cup. He played an important role as the Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals, continuing the strong international form that has previously attracted Barcelona’s attention.

Barcelona were linked with Ounahi after his impressive displays for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup. However, the proposed move did not reach completion, leaving the midfielder at the centre of Girona’s plans.

The latest interest represents a renewed possibility rather than a confirmed transfer. Barcelona are studying the situation while considering their midfield requirements, but there is no indication that an agreement has been reached with the player or his club.

Ounahi remains under contract with Girona until the summer of 2030. His current market value is estimated at 30m euros, a figure that would form part of the financial considerations surrounding any potential deal.

The midfielder’s previous international performances made him a prominent name following Morocco’s run at the 2022 World Cup, and his contribution to the team’s progress to the quarter-finals at the 2026 tournament has ensured that he remains under close observation.

For now, Ounahi has not made a decision about his next step. Barcelona’s interest has resurfaced at a time when the club are assessing their options in midfield, while the Moroccan continues to draw attention from multiple teams during the summer market.
