Barcelona have opened discussions over a possible summer move for Tottenham defender Pedro Porro as they prepare for the potential departure of Jules Kounde.
The Spanish club has contacted people close to Porro to assess whether a deal could be possible, according to Spanish reports cited by Metro. Barcelona’s interest comes as Arsenal consider a move for Kounde, prompting the Catalan side to begin planning for possible changes to their defence.
Journalist Gerard Romero said on his YouTube channel that Barcelona had stepped up their approach to Porro’s representatives in recent days and had presented them with an initial proposal.
Kounde has not indicated that he wants to leave Barcelona at this stage. However, his long-term position at the club remains unresolved, and that uncertainty has encouraged Barcelona to explore alternatives before the summer transfer window.
Porro, 26, has established himself as an important player for Tottenham and has produced a series of strong performances since joining the club. He has also been a regular starter for Spain in most of their matches during their run to winning the most recent World Cup.
The Spanish right-back is under contract with Tottenham until 2031 after extending his deal in June. He is also highly regarded by manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has described him as “an important player capable of influencing matches defensively and offensively”.
Barcelona’s interest is understood to be linked to Porro’s versatility and his ability to perform more than one role in the defensive line. That flexibility would appeal to the club if Kounde were to leave.
Kounde remains a Barcelona player and there is no indication from him that he is actively seeking a transfer. Arsenal’s interest, however, means the Spanish club is taking precautions while it assesses the possible effect of any offer for the France international.
Porro’s contract and his importance to Tottenham could make any potential move challenging. Nevertheless, Barcelona have made an early approach to his representatives as they consider how best to rebuild their defence should the situation surrounding Kounde change.
