Friday evening brings us further action from the Nations League and a League C Group 3 encounter between hosts, Azerbaijan, and visitors, Slovakia, when the two teams meet at the Dalğa Arena in Baku.
Kazakhstan have emerged as the surprise package in Group 3 as they sit top of the group with the maximum six points from their opening two games of this new Nations League campaign while the likes of Slovakia, Belarus and Azerbaijan are fighting it out to avoid the relegation play-off spot.
Azerbaijan were one of the early victims of Kazakhstan as they lost their opening group match to the group leaders, 2-0 away from home.
But Azerbaijan at least got themselves off the mark in the following game as they earned a solid point with a 0-0 draw away from home at Belarus.
Azerbaijan will now be looking forward to returning to the more familiar surroundings of their Dalğa Arena as they prepare for the visit of Slovakia with the hosts seeking to end their current dismal spell of 12 matches without a win.
It’s an even leaner spell at home as they’re 14 games without a win while goals could be scarce as three of their last five meetings with Slovakia have been under 2.5 goals.
Slovakia recorded a 1-0 win away from home at Belarus in their Nations League opener but he visitors then swiftly succumbed to Kazakhstan, losing 1-0 on home soil, making it one win and one loss in their opening two games of the group phase of this season’s competition.
Although Slovakia have won three of their last five games away from home, the bigger picture shows that the visitors have managed to claim just four wins out of their last 13 matches overall in all competitions which includes a fair sprinkling of defeats as well.
Slovakia have fallen to six defeats within these last 13 matches and they have also managed to pick up just four wins out of their last 12 outings on their travels as well.
So there are certainly no guarantees of a positive result for Slovakia in Baku on Friday night.
In addition, nine out of Slovakia’s previous 12 away games have also resulted in under 2.5 goals so this upcoming clash could be a low-scoring affair.
