The second edition of the Democracy Cup is set to kick off with an exciting exhibition match between two arms of government—Parliament and the Judiciary—on Friday, August 29, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The friendly game will serve as the curtain-raiser for the main Democracy Cup showdown between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Parliament team will be captained by Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, while the Judiciary is yet to announce its team leader. The fixture was confirmed during the closing session of Parliament’s Second Meeting, when First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor read a statement on behalf of Speaker Alban Bagbin.
The Democracy Cup, launched in 2024, is a parliamentary initiative aimed at promoting democratic values, civic engagement, and peaceful coexistence through the power of football. This year’s edition builds on the success of the inaugural tournament and continues to serve as a symbol of national unity.
The official launch of the 2025 edition took place on July 24 at the D.F. Annan Auditorium, with key figures from the football and political spheres in attendance, including former Black Stars players, MPs, and GFA Executive Council members.
Parliament was adjourned sine die on August 1, following ten weeks of sittings in the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament. As Parliament’s team begins training in the coming days, anticipation is already growing for what promises to be a spirited and symbolic clash on the football pitch.
