On Monday evening, Athletic Club hosts Real Mallorca at San Mames, as both clubs look to kick off the new league campaign in Spain with a victory.

Athletic Club

Los Leones’ finished eighth place in La Liga last season, missing out on a European place by just four points. The Basque outfit finished last season with a poor run of league form, winning just one of their final four matches in the Spanish top-flight.

The run cost them the chance of European action this season. The fact that they failed to score in three of their final four league matches was a big factor in that poor end-of-season form.

San Mames has been something of a fortress in years gone by. However, arguably it may not have been as much of a citadel in recent years.

However, Athletic still have a solid current home record, as they have lost just one of their previous nine home games in La Liga.

Bilbao has also won six of those nine home games in the Spanish top-flight. Athletic have also kept three straight clean sheets in the league at San Mames.

Real Mallorca

The Islanders beat the drop by a point last season and will be keen to kick off the new campaign in a positive manner.

Mallorca finished last season with a three-game unbeaten run, including winning their final two league games of the season against Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna.

Their final games of the Spanish top-flight campaign were high-scoring, with over 2.5 goals scored in five of their last seven matches of the season.

Mallorca were poor on their travels last season in La Liga. The last day 2-0 win at Osasuna ended a ten-game winless run in the Spanish top-flight for the visitors.

What does Forebet predict?

Forebet predicts that Athletic will continue their strong recent run of home form by recording a victory in a high-scoring encounter.
