Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has been told he is no longer part of the club’s plans for the 2026/27 season, according to an exclusive report by Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio.
The 27-year-old has reportedly been advised by Asante Kotoko director of football Stanley Menzo and head coach Eric Tinkler to look for a new club after being informed that they cannot guarantee him a place in the squad they are assembling for the upcoming campaign.
The decision comes less than a year after Opoku returned to the Porcupine Warriors, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract following his departure from Moroccan club Olympique Khouribga.
Opoku’s second spell at Asante Kotoko was disrupted by injuries during the 2025/26 season. Despite those difficulties, the forward scored four goals in 16 appearances for the club.
His latest campaign followed a successful first spell with Asante Kotoko during the 2020/21 season. Opoku scored six goals and provided three assists in 16 matches, performances which earned him a move to Algerian giants USM Alger.
He subsequently left USM Alger for Olympique Khouribga in Morocco before returning to Asante Kotoko on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
The forward is now expected to find another club as he attempts to revive his career ahead of the new season. His departure would mark a swift change in direction after the club brought him back less than a year ago.
Menzo and Tinkler are reshaping the squad as Asante Kotoko prepare for the 2026/27 campaign, with Opoku understood not to feature in their plans for the team they are building.
The reported decision follows a season in which Opoku’s involvement was limited by injury, although his four goals in 16 appearances ensured he still made a contribution when available.
His earlier record with the Porcupine Warriors remains the strongest period of his career at the club. During the 2020/21 campaign, he scored six times and registered three assists in only 16 matches, form that led to his transfer to USM Alger.
Opoku’s next move will determine where he continues his career after his brief return to Asante Kotoko. For now, the striker is expected to seek a new destination after being told that the club cannot guarantee him a place in its squad for the forthcoming season.
