Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have marked their 91st anniversary by pledging to build a stronger future through modern infrastructure, advanced football technology and increased investment.
The Porcupine Warriors, founded in Kumasi on 31 August 1935, commemorated the milestone on Monday, 31 August, with a statement reflecting on the club’s history and setting out its ambitions for the years ahead.
Kotoko said the club represents the “indomitable and warrior spirit of the great Asante Kingdom and its allies”, a description that reflects its identity and deep connection with the region.
The club highlighted an outstanding record that includes 24 Ghana Premier League titles, nine FA Cups, three Super Cups, 16 SWAG Cups and two CAF championships.
Kotoko also reflected on their recent success in the Democracy Cup, where they defeated arch-rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties to win the competition for the second time.
Their greatest achievements on the continental stage came in 1970 and 1983, when they won Africa’s premier club championship. Kotoko remain the only Ghanaian club to have won the competition twice and were later named African Club of the 20th Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
The anniversary message also paid tribute to several of the club’s legendary players, including Baba Yara, Dogo Moro, Osei Kofi, Ibrahim Sunday, Malik Jabir, Robert Mensah, Abdul Razak and Opoku Afriyie.
Asante Kotoko said the contribution of those players continues to motivate younger generations and remains an important part of the club’s identity.
“We are more resolved than ever to move into the future with greater fortitude, a sense of purpose and character building,” the statement said.
The club said its next phase would focus on improving its facilities and making greater use of technology in football.
“We shall pursue development of modern infrastructure and adopt the state-of-the-art technology in football to compete at the highest levels and achieve more laurels for the Porcupine family.”
The Board also thanked the club’s Life Patron and sole shareholder, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for what it described as “27 years” of unwavering support.
Sponsors, journalists and supporters were recognised for their role in helping Kotoko develop, while particular praise was reserved for the club’s fans.
Describing them as “the blood and lifeline of Asante Kotoko,” the club expressed gratitude for their continued backing and called on all members of the Kotoko family to maintain unity.
The statement concluded: “We are more now than ever united in heritage and driven by excellence to forge ahead to achieve more laurels for the club.”
