Arsenal take advantage of Manchester United’s implosion and Newcastle excel in hot or not: Matchday 33

Another eventful week of Premier League action has been and gone, and 101 pick over the bones of what remains in Hot or Not: Matchday 33 edition.

HOT: Newcastle United

Eddie Howe continued his remarkable turnaround on Tyneside with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Norwich City, moving into the top half of the Premier League for the first time since August in the process.

Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes both popped up with goals for the Magpies, and the good feeling seems to be reverberating through the club ahead of another big transfer window.

HOT: Arsenal

Arsenal have made the race for the top 4 hard from themselves, but within 4 days have gone from major outsiders to favourites once more thanks to a pair of wins at Chelsea and against Manchester United.

Their 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge, an unexpected result by many, was followed up by a strong 3-1 win over a woeful Manchester United side that are in freefall and whose defeat effectively left them out of the Champions League race.

These results, combined with Tottenham’s draw at Brentford, mean that the Gunners now hold a two-point advantage over their north London rivals heading into the final five games of the season, before the two sides meet in the penultimate week of the season.

HOT: Gabriel Jesus

It turns out that all Manchester City needed to do to get Gabriel Jesus firing on all cylinders was link him with a move to Arsenal. Having scored just 3 Premier League goals before the weekend, the Brazilian netted 4 and grabbed himself an assist in Manchester City’s 5-1 demolition of relegation-doomed Watford.

With Erling Haaland seemingly on his way to the Etihad this summer and Julian Alvarez definitely on his way, the summer represents a massive fork in the Brazilian’s career. Should he remain at City, he will need to prove himself undroppable, something that he hasn’t managed yet.

NOT: Bruno Fernandes

A missed penalty and fortunate to stay on the pitch for 90 minutes for a high challenge, it was a day to forget for Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese opted to take the penalty over Cristiano Ronaldo, and will probably be wishing he hadn’t as they fell to a 3-1 defeat.

The result, Manchester United’s fourth away defeat on the bounce, has left them seemingly out of the race for the final Champions League spot.

NOT: Watford

A 5-1 hammering at the hands of Manchester City seemingly made the relegation of Roy Hodgson’s side a certainty, nine points adrift of safety with just 15 left to play for.

It is perhaps to be expected for the club, who recruited plentifully in both transfer windows but have not been able to turn those additions into results on the pitch. Their 23 losses is the most in the top flight this season, and they are already planning for a promotion push next season, but it is a pitiful end to their Premier League return.

NOT: Everton

Frank Lampard’s side will point to some questionable decisions this season, but the reality of their situation is setting in as they find themselves in the relegation zone with six games left to play.

Having taken 4 points from their last 15 available, and with games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester City still to come in their final 6 games, Lampard and co. desperately need to being picking up points to avoid beginning next season in the Championship.
