Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong’s joke that he would wreck his Arsneal team-mates’ World Cup dreams by injuring them at training to boost the Black Stars chances at the tournament in Brazil has sparked a frenzy in the English media.
Ghana international midfielder used Twitter to joke that he would deliberately injure Germany trio Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker in training so they missed the tournament in Brazil next summer.
African powerhouse Ghana face Germany, Portugal and the US in a so-called group of death in South America in June.
And Frimpong, 21, tweeted after the draw: “Don’t worry Ghana, I’ve got your back, Ozil, Podolski and Per won’t be going to the World Cup due to my studs in training.â€
But the English media have not taken his joke lightly claiming the Ghanaian could be punished by Arsenal for the joke which he quickly deleted.
According to the Daily Star newspaper, ‘Arsenal star Emmanuel Frimpong could land in more hot water with Emirates chiefs after threatening to wreck his Gunners’ team-mates’ World Cup dreams.’
Even though Frimpong quickly deleted the message but supporters lashed out at the Ghanaian for the joke.
One Gooner who saw the tweet said: “Why would anyone say something like that about their own team-mates?
“The pinnacle of any player’s career is to represent their country in a World Cup.
“It is horrendous that he could have been contemplating deliberately injuring the players he mentioned.
“Even if it was said in jest it’s a really dim thing to say. He should stay off Twitter.â€
