Arsenal seal £3m deal for Sao Paulo’s Marquinhos

Arsenal have agreed to pay €3.5 million (£3 million) for Sao Paulo forward Marquinhos.

The 19-year-old has already made 39 senior appearances for the Brazilian side since getting into the first squad last year, scoring four goals and setting up three more.

Marquinhos made 21 appearances in the Brazilian Serie A in 2021, starting five of them, scoring a goal, and providing an assist in the Copa Libertadores’ last-16 match against Racing Club.

During the early portions of the 2022 season, the adolescent has already earned experience in the Copa Sudamericana, and he has been capped three times by Brazil at the Under-17 level.

The youngster’s contract with the Serie A club is supposed to end in the summer of 2024, but according to Sport Witness, Arsenal are likely to sign him for a bargain price owing to contract problems.

Because the winger signed his five-year contract when he was just 16 years old, FIFA has only permitted the club to keep him for three years due to his underage status.

Furthermore, with legal action looming from the player’s camp, Sao Paulo is under pressure to sell him immediately rather than risk losing him on a free transfer, allowing Arsenal to pounce.

According to the source, the two teams have already agreed on a sum of €3.5 million (£3 million), although Mikel Arteta is unlikely to join the squad next season.

Marquinhos is expected to be loaned out in order to continue his development, with a move to Spain being the most likely possibility.
