Mikel Arteta has publicly backed Thomas Partey to remain at Arsenal beyond the summer, despite growing speculation over the midfielder’s future amid the club’s reported pursuit of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
“Yes, I’d like Thomas Partey to stay and sign a new deal,” Arteta confirmed. “Consistency-wise, it’s been his best season. I think the way he’s played, performed, his availability has been exceptional, and he’s a really important player for us.”
Arteta’s show of support comes just days after reports emerged that Arsenal are prepared to activate Zubimendi’s £50.8 million release clause, a move that many believe could signal a transition in the club’s midfield setup under new sporting director Andrea Berta.
Despite the looming arrival of the Spanish Euro 2024 champion, Arteta’s comments suggest a continued role for Partey, who has experienced something of a resurgence this season.
After being limited to just 15 appearances during the injury-hit 2023–24 campaign, Partey has bounced back impressively, making 45 appearances across all competitions this term.
Now 31 and entering the final year of his contract, Partey’s future remains uncertain. While sources close to the player suggested earlier this year that he was preparing for a summer departure—amid interest from Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and clubs in Saudi Arabia—recent developments, along with Arteta’s endorsement, point to the possibility of a contract extension.
Zubimendi’s expected arrival raises questions about how Arsenal’s midfield will be reshaped. The Spaniard is regarded as a reliable, tactically intelligent holding midfielder with strong defensive metrics—74 clearances and a 63.6% tackle success rate this season—that outperform Partey’s. His presence would likely allow Declan Rice to operate further forward, potentially at the expense of Partey’s minutes.
However, Arteta appears intent on keeping balance in his squad. “It’s not just about talent,” he said. “It’s about leadership, understanding of our system, and consistency—Thomas has shown all of that.”
Sporting director Andrea Berta, who initially sanctioned Partey’s move to Arsenal while at Atletico Madrid, is reportedly open to offering the Ghanaian a short-term extension—likely a two-year deal—though the midfielder’s £200,000-per-week wages and possible reduced role could complicate negotiations.
Arsenal may be moving toward a younger, more durable midfield core, but Arteta’s words underline that Partey still has a valued place in the team.
Whether the player is willing to adapt to a new role and accept fresh terms remains to be seen, but for now, his manager has made one thing clear: Thomas Partey remains integral to his plans.
