Former Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi believes Andre Ayew could play a leading role in bringing meaningful change to Ghana football if he moves into football administration.
Mikel made the comments after arriving at Accra International Airport ahead of an appearance on his podcast in Ghana. Ayew is expected to join him as a special guest.
The former Ghana captain has recently been linked with a possible bid for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association. His profile within the country’s sporting landscape has also increased through appearances at events and support for teams.
Ayew is currently a free agent after spending last season with Dutch club NAC Breda. The 35-year-old has not been confirmed as a candidate for the Ghana Football Association presidency, but speculation about his possible future in football administration has continued to grow.
Mikel, who faced Ayew during their international careers, believes the Ghanaian’s playing experience and standing in African football could make him an important figure away from the pitch.
“Oh, Andre Ayew is the guy, isn’t he? He’s the main man, isn’t he? You talk about the legends in Ghana football. You talk about Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, the guys that I played against.”
“Of course, then you talk about Andre. I think he’s a top player. I played against him a couple of times, I think. He’s a top player, a great human being.”
“I think if you talk about African football, I think he might be the guy that can bring some changes to Ghanaian football. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
Mikel’s remarks add weight to growing interest in Ayew’s potential role in Ghana football after his playing career.
Ayew is regarded by Mikel as one of the leading African footballers of his generation. The former Nigeria international also placed him alongside prominent Ghanaian figures including Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, all of whom he played against during his own international career.
The comments came as Mikel travelled to Ghana for his podcast appearance, with Ayew set to feature as the programme’s special guest. Their meeting is expected to bring further attention to the former captain’s possible ambitions in the administration of the game.
For now, Ayew remains without a club following his spell at NAC Breda last season. His recent involvement in sporting events and his support for teams have nevertheless kept him visible in Ghanaian football circles.
Mikel’s backing reflects the belief that Ayew’s knowledge of the game, international experience and reputation could be valuable if he chooses to pursue a leadership position. Any future move into administration would represent a shift from Ayew’s established career as a player, but Mikel says he could be the figure capable of helping to introduce changes to Ghanaian football.
