Black Stars team manager Ameenu Shardow, has debunked media reports that Andre Ayew was axed from Ghana’s matchday squad for Africa Cup of Nations first leg qualifier against Angola.
The captain’s name was not captured in the team sheet but was spotted amongst the substitutes on the bench for the match in Kumasi.
It raised concerns with many believing the decision to keep Ayew on the bench could trigger sanctions from CAF.
But speaking to JoySports, Shardow explained: “It’s not true that Andre Ayew was not on the list of the official matchday squad. Even in the Ghana Premier League, if you’re not on the official list as a starter or a substitute, you can never be on the bench.”
“We all saw the player on the bench, so it should tell you something [that he was part of the matchday squad],” Shardow added.
Andre couldn’t make it to the second leg in Luanda due to a knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the squad.
