Retired referee Alex Kotey has apologized and retracted bribery allegations made against former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie.
Kotey had alleged that Afriyie offered him money to influence the outcome of a match between Gamba All Blacks and Asante Kotoko.
Afriyie, however, countered the claims, stating that Kotey never officiated any of the three matches between the two teams during his tenure at Gamba All Blacks.
In an interview with Top FM, Kotey has now withdrawn his statement and asked for Afriyie’s forgiveness.
“I have called George Afriyie to ask for his forgiveness. He is my close friend in football, and I didn’t mean to damage his image.
“I have sought his forgiveness so we can continue our friendship. I have retracted my statement,” Kotey said.
Afriyie played a key role in Gamba All Blacks’ promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2005 before leaving the club in 2008.
