The former Black Stars and Wolfsburg captain is keen to succeed the job as a coach and is already eyeing that as a potential launchpad to great things in the future.
Akunnor is planning on working on his coaching badges side by side his engagement at Wise and while aware that patients will be a commodity in short supply, he insists he will not be afraid to take risks.
“I am keen on this job, but I know I will make mistakes and I will learn on the job,” he told KickOffGhana.com. “There will be the fans who will scream and all, but I wanted to go into coaching and will work hard towards it.”
Akunnor had a distinguished career representing Ghana at the Nations Cup, the Olympics, and World Youth Championships.
He also spent more than ten years in the top flight of German football, captaining VFL Wolfsburg at one point. Now he wants to return to the European stage one day as a manager.
“It is an area that many Africans have not broken through, but I am ambitious and that is my target. I want that one day I will be coaching in a major European League, and even though Wise may be a small start, it is a very important one.”
