Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful has thrown his weight behind Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Carragher recently stated that AFCON is not considered a “major competition” by European standards.
Carragher’s comments were made during a post-match discussion on Sky Sports, where he suggested that Mohamed Salah would need to win the Champions League to be considered for the Ballon d’Or, as AFCON is not viewed as a major tournament by voters.
Arhinful agrees with Carragher’s assessment, pointing out that the continental tournament is not highly regarded in Europe.
“African Cup of Nations competitions is not recognised in Europe by so called giants of football in this case UEFA,” Arhinful opined in an interview with Sporty FM
The African Cup of Nations has been in existence for 66 years, as it was first held in 1957.
