AFCON 2028: Egypt weighs hosting bid as CAF confirms major format shift

Egypt could be set for a return to the Africa Cup of Nations hosting stage, with the Egyptian Football Association considering a bid for the 2028 tournament, according to Africasoccer.com.

The development comes as the current AFCON is being staged in Morocco, while Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are preparing to jointly host the 2027 edition ;  the first three-nation co-hosting arrangement in the tournament’s history.

Following the 2027 tournament, AFCON will officially transition to a four-year cycle, a major shift from its traditional two-year format. As a result, the 2028 edition is expected to mark a new era for the competition.

Sources close to the Egyptian FA say discussions are underway to assess the feasibility of submitting a formal hosting request to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the bidding process for AFCON 2028 has been opened during a meeting with representatives of all 54 African nations, held on the sidelines of the African Nations Championship and attended by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Motsepe also announced the launch of an annual African Nations League, with its inaugural edition scheduled to take place after the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

Egypt last hosted AFCON in 2019 and remains one of the competition’s most experienced hosts, having staged the tournament five times previously  in 1959, 1974, 1986, 2006 and 2019.

If the bid materialises, Egypt would once again position itself at the centre of African football as CAF ushers in a restructured AFCON era
