Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the Accra Sports Stadium to be completely demolished and rebuilt, warning that short-term repairs will not be enough to prepare Ghana’s national stadium for major international football.
Kyere-Duah made the proposal after inspecting the facility, where he said he saw extensive deterioration that raised serious questions about its readiness to host next year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The MP said the stadium could appear impressive during televised night matches because of the effect of the floodlights, but argued that a closer inspection revealed the full scale of its problems.
“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent. But when you take a deep tour, as we’ve done, then you realise we have a very long way to go,” he told Citi Sports.
He called on those responsible for the stadium to act quickly on the issues identified during the tour.
Kyere-Duah said Ghana should move away from carrying out repairs in stages and instead replace the existing venue with a modern facility capable of meeting the standards required by Fifa and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana’s capital, Accra, to host FIFA and CAF-sanctioned matches,” he said.
The MP described the stadium’s condition as “terrible” and said the situation demanded urgent attention.
His comments come as Ghana prepares for a period in which the Accra Sports Stadium may be required to host important international fixtures. The country is due to stage the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations next year and will also host Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
The stadium has traditionally been one of Ghana’s leading sporting venues. It has hosted major domestic competitions as well as international matches, making its condition a significant issue for the country’s football authorities and wider sporting infrastructure.
The inspection has renewed concerns about whether Ghana has enough venues that comply with international requirements. Kyere-Duah’s recommendation would involve going beyond piecemeal renovation and constructing an entirely new stadium in the capital.
The lawmaker’s comments were reported by Adomonline.com on 28 August 2026, following his visit to the ground. His assessment contrasts with the polished appearance the venue can present during floodlit matches, which he said does not reflect the problems visible throughout the facility during a more detailed inspection.
