Young Ghanaian midfielder Aaron Essel says he is determined to make his mark after earning a spot in the Black Stars squad for the ongoing Unity Cup in London.
The 19-year-old, who currently plays for North Texas SC on loan from St Johnstone in Scotland, is among the new faces invited by head coach Otto Addo as part of a 23-man team for the tournament.
Essel’s inclusion comes on the back of his performance at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, where Ghana reached the quarter-final stage.
With several senior players rested for the friendly competition, Essel is expected to be given a chance to showcase his potential on the international stage.
“It’s a huge honour to be called up,” Essel told his club’s media team. *“Wearing the national colours is a dream come true. I’m ready to work hard, take this opportunity seriously, and do everything I can to help the team.”
Ghana will take on Nigeria in a high-stakes derby on Wednesday at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London.
The winner will advance to face Jamaica, who edged Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in the other fixture.
