Moldova take on Liechtenstein in this vitally important League D/Group 1 clash at the Stadionul Zimbru with the hosts facing a ‘must win’ situation if they’re to have any chance of overhauling the current group leaders, Latvia, with a win here on Sunday afternoon in this final match in the group phase for both nations.

It’s been an encouraging and positive Nations League campaign for Moldova who sit in 2nd place and two points behind 1st placed Latvia, with their one defeat being what could prove to be a decisive 4-2 loss at home to Latvia, although the hosts have taken their challenge for promotion into the final round of group matches.

Wins against Liechtenstein, Andorra and a subsequent 2-1 win away at Latvia have maintained Moldova’s push for possible promotion up to League C but first they must beat Liechtenstein.

Results on home soil in the Nations League format have been a mixed bag for Moldova who have won 2, drawn 3 and lost 4 to date.

Goals may be in short supply here this Sunday as five of Moldova’s previous nine home games have resulted in under 2.5 goals being scored.

Liechtenstein find themselves sitting rock bottom of Group 1 without a point to their name having lost all five of their games in Group 1 to date in what has been a particularly poor campaign from the visitors.

Defeats to Sunday’s upcoming opponents, Moldova, along with home and away losses to Latvia and Andorra have condemned Liechtenstein to bottom spot, regardless of the result against Moldova on Sunday afternoon as 3rd placed Andorra hold a seven point cushion over the hapless minnows prior to the final match day in the group.

The Nations League hasn’t been a particularly successful hunting ground for the visitors who have managed to pick up just two wins from their previous 15 games overall in this competition with wins against Gibraltar and San Marino, but they’ve also been handed a total of 10 defeats as well.

Liechtenstein have recorded just one away win to date as well, but they’ll be keen to put in a decent final performance in the group on Sunday and could put up stubborn resistance in this one.

Each of the previous three meetings between Moldova and Liechtenstein have ended with under 3 goals being scored and another low-scoring encounter looks to be on the cards this Sunday as well.
