SOTTIL: “WE SHOWED WHAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT” –

Published: 4 years ago
Series A

Udinese coach Andrea Sottil was interviewed after Udinese claimed an impressive 1-0 home win over Fiorentina:

“We played as we set out to play. I’m happy with that and for the lads. It’s them who are out there and making things happen. They went out there and followed our gameplan to a tee, showing fighting spirit, courage and character against a really good team.

“Fiorentina came here to take the game to us but I think the lads’ performance was deserving of a win. We could’ve sealed with win sooner. We allowed them a chance with a header at a set piece but we dealt with it well as a team.

“The lads gave their all and the subs also settled well into the game and we defended well as a unit. I’d like to congratulate the lads. We really deserved the win.

“I’ve always said that the hallmarks of this team are energy, physical presence and great technical skills. Consequently we’re great at high pressing and not caving into the opposition. There are times you’re forced to drop back when the opposition get to have their say and we were up against a top team.

“The goal we scored encapsulated exactly what I’m after with this team. We can cause a lot of problems when pressing high and winning the ball back because we’ve got players blessed with great energy and quality. They can really hurt the opposition. This is what won the game but this needs to be what we always do as a club when it comes to how we play football. We’re more than capable of this.”

“As for individuals, Roberto Pereyra is an amazing leader and contributed well both in attack and defence. He’s a true captain. Kingsley Ehizibue came in and did well and I’m sure he’ll settle in with no issues. I’m fortunate to have strength in depth. Adam Masina suffered a twisted knee and it doesn’t look good. We hope it’s nothing serious. He’s a top lad who’s been doing well and there’s obviously the World Cup around the corner. Regarding Beto, who came off after 65 minutes, he suffered a bad injury so we’re being careful with him.

“The transfer window is closing soon but I’m happy with the squad I’ve got. I’ll sleep easy because the owners are great and know what they want. We’ve got a top squad capable of competing. I don’t think there will be any surprises in the coming 24 hours.”
