Spurs: Conte joins Chalobah race

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Trevoh Chalobah to north London this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Evening Standard, who claim that Antonio Conte has joined both Inter Milan and AS Roma in pursuing a deal for the Chelsea centre-back, who is said to be open to a move away from Stamford Bridge due to Thomas Tuchel’s own attempts to land Wesley Fofana.

The report goes on to state that, despite the 23-year-old’s desire to secure a move elsewhere prior to September’s transfer deadline, the Blues are in a strong position to negotiate a considerable fee for the former England under-21 international as his current contract runs until 2026.

“Exciting” prospective signing

Chalobah is not exactly a regular fixture in the Chelsea first team, but considering just how impressive the defender was when given the opportunity to feature last season – coupled with his ability to operate from a number of different positions on the pitch – it is not difficult to understand why Conte is interested in a deal to bring the 23-year-old to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Indeed, over his 20 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the £18m-rated talent was in exceptional defensive form for the Blues, helping his side to keep nine clean sheets, along with making two tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.1 clearances and winning 4.8 duels (at a success rate of 61%) per game.

The £20k-per-week centre-back – who is also comfortable operating from defensive midfield or as a full-back – also impressed going forwards. He scored three goals and registered one assist, in addition to completing 57.5 passes (at a success rate of 91%), 2.2 long balls and 0.5 dribbles and taking 0.5 shots per match.

These returns saw the player who Daniel Childs dubbed “outstanding” and Oliver Harbord labelled “exciting” average a remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.23, not only ranking him as Chelsea’s seventh-best performer in the league but also as the 23rd-best performer in the entire division last time out.

As such, considering his undoubted talent, impressive positional versatility and potential for further development in the future, Chalobah would indeed appear to make an incredibly exciting prospective addition to Conte’s current defensive options in north London.

That leads us to believe that the 52-year-old must do all that he can to land the former England youth international in the coming weeks.
