How Liverpool made history with FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool managed to etch their name ever further into the history books of English football on Saturday, owing to the club’s downing of Manchester City.

The Reds were of course back in action a short time ago, making the trip to Wembley with sights firmly set on a spot in the finale of the FA Cup.

And, when all was said and done in the English capital, march onto the competition’s showpiece is precisely what Klopp and co. managed.

Not only that but, in the process, Liverpool became the first side in the history of English football to reach the final of both the League Cup and FA Cup in the same season, on a trio of separate occasions:

Mane bags brace

Turning attentions back towards the action itself on Saturday, it was of course Sadio Mane who proved the star of the show in guiding Liverpool beyond Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

After Ibrahima Konate opened the game’s scoring inside ten minutes, wide-man Mane put Liverpool out of sight before half-time, first taking advantage of a mindless Zack Steffen blunder, before lashing home a sumptuous volley on the 45-minute mark:

Man City, to their credit, did manage to pull a pair of goals back over the course of the 2nd-half, but, in the end, strikes on the part of Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva were left to stand as little more than consolation, as Liverpool kept alive hopes of an unprecedented quadruple.
