Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Patrice Motsepe has confirmed the postponement of the 2023 African Cup of Nations to 2024.
The competition was expected to come off between June – July 2023 by the host Ivory Coast. However, the date coincides with the height of the country’s rainy season.
Confirming the news, Motsepe maintained that the regional footballing body can’t afford to take any risks.
Meanwhile, the African biggest football showpiece was moved from the traditional January-February schedule to June-July to avoid clashing with the European club football.
Unfortunately, per the rainfall pattern in Ivory Coast, honouring the competition during this time of the year may disrupt the championship.
As a result, the AFCON will be played in January-February, 2024, hosted by the Ivorians.
