Port City FC returned to winning ways in the Ghana Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars at Daasebre Boamah Darko II Park on Sunday.
Francis Gyetuah scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute, taking Port City to third place in the table on 18 points. They are three points behind leaders Medeama SC.
The match remained closely contested through the opening hour, with neither side able to create a clear breakthrough. But Port City took control when a misplaced pass outside the penalty area gave Gyetuah an opportunity.
The forward showed composure to evade his marker with a clever dummy before placing his finish beyond the goalkeeper and putting the hosts ahead.
Port City almost extended their advantage shortly afterwards. Ransford Nartey found room inside the penalty area, but his close-range attempt was blocked by a Basake Holy Stars defender.
The visitors responded by applying greater pressure as they looked for an equaliser. Their best opportunity came in the 75th minute, when Port City goalkeeper Daniel Amissah punched away a dangerous free-kick to protect his side’s narrow lead.
Basake Holy Stars maintained possession during the closing stages, but Port City’s organised defence held firm. The result secured all three points for the league newcomers and continued their strong start to their first Ghana Premier League campaign.
The win also extended Port City’s impressive home record and strengthened their challenge for a top-four finish.
Basake Holy Stars, meanwhile, suffered their third consecutive league defeat. The Anyinase-based club were again unable to turn possession into a goal and left the match still searching for a response.
Holy Stars will have the chance to end their losing run when they host Vision FC in their next league fixture.
Port City FC will travel to fellow newcomers Debibi United, aiming to maintain the momentum generated by their latest victory.
