Bayern Munich maintained their unbeaten start to the Champions League campaign with a convincing 2-0 win away to Atletico Madrid.
Lennart Karl made amends for an ineffective first half by putting the visitors ahead nine minutes after the interval. The 18-year-old capitalised on a defensive mistake, stealing possession from Robin le Normand before lifting the ball over Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Konrad Laimer added Bayern’s second with a powerful finish after being found in space by Harry Kane. The midfielder struck the ball fiercely and it flew over Oblak before hitting the roof of the net.
The result extended Bayern’s perfect unbeaten record in Europe this season, while Atletico were unable to find a response at home.
Kane was making his first European appearance since winning the Ballon d’Or, but the England captain could not add to his scoring record. He had found the net in each of his previous 10 appearances in the competition and needed one more goal to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for scoring in the most consecutive Champions League matches.
However, Kane failed to seriously test Oblak. He sent an acrobatic effort wide before another low strike also missed the target.
Atletico were denied a possible route back into the match when Oblak produced an excellent save to push a deflected effort from Dayot Upamecano on to the crossbar.
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer enjoyed a largely quiet evening, with the hosts managing only one shot on target.
Bayern’s Champions League campaign continues against Lille on Wednesday 25 November. Atletico Madrid will face Norwegian champions Viking on the same date.
