Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau says he would rather watch El Clasico than a Ghana Premier League match if the two games were being played at the same time.
The outspoken football administrator questioned the domestic competition’s ability to attract supporters, arguing that its current level of excitement does not match the appeal of major European fixtures.
Speaking to Hot FM, Owusu Achau said the quality and entertainment associated with high-profile matches between Europe’s leading clubs made them a more attractive choice for many football fans.
His comments add to the continuing debate over whether the Ghana Premier League can compete for attention at a time when supporters have easy access to elite competitions from across Europe.
Ghana has a wealth of football talent, but the domestic league continues to face several challenges. Attendances have declined, while concerns remain over scheduling, inconsistent officiating and the overall matchday experience.
Those problems have made it increasingly difficult for clubs to persuade supporters to attend matches regularly. Owusu Achau’s assessment is likely to renew calls for the Ghana Football Association, clubs and sponsors to work together to improve the league’s image and make it a more compelling product.
The Bechem United president’s comments came as his club prepared for their next league fixture. The Hunters host FC Samartex at Nana Gyeabour Park in Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League.
Bechem United will be aiming to secure all three points in front of their home supporters.
